3 Ways to Read More

Reading has always been one of my favorite hobbies.  In the past I would read in bursts – I’d devour a book in a few days, then go months before I took the time to find a new read.  Lately  I’ve been reading much more thanks to some helpful tools I’ve recently discovered.  For all you busy bees out there, here is how I’ve made reading a priority:

Goodreads:  This site, which is also a wonderful app, is the perfect way to keep all the books in your life straight.  Literature is divided into 3 different shelves - currently reading, want to read, and read.  It also syncs with your Facebook account so you can see what your friends are reading and allows you to suggest books to one another.  It also has a fairly big community of authors who will post blogs and review books as well.

GAL: GAL (an acronym for "Girls at Library") is a truly delightful online magazine.  Different women from across the country are interviewed about their favorite books and different reading habits.  On the site there is also a page called "The Sanity Shelf" and it's a list of books that interviewees have returned to time and time again.  The whole site is a wonderful way to get inspired to read.

Bibliofeed:  Bibliofeed is an Instagram account that is as visually beautiful as it is informative.  Followers get a synopsis of books from specially selected curators.  It's a really simple way to find your next great read with literally zero effort.

What Darling Books!

Being a bibliophile, and complete lover of all things whimsical, I nearly lost it when I discovered Olympia Le Tan's charming line of book inspired handbags.  They are just so sweet and quirky, they're the type of bag I'd expect Zooey Deschanel to be carrying.  Although far out of my price range, I can't help but lust - just a tad - over these sweet little clutches.

Fairy Things

My latest read The Great Night by Chris Adrian has my head consumed with fairy tales.  It's  a retelling of William Shakespear's A Midsummer Night's Dream and I'm obsessing over the magic, the fairies, and  whimsical writing style used by Adrian.  Growing up I was completely fixated by faries and wanted nothing more than to live in the English countryside and discover all the magicI was sure it offered (part of me still really wants to do this. Hey, I never said I was cool.)    Anyways, I digress.   The lovely images imposed by this book have me wanting to add a little magic to my everyday life, particularly to my wardrobe.  Below are some editorials that have helped me realize my visions.

Emma for Material Girl magazine.

Natalia Vodianova for Vogue China

Sunday for Dubai's M Magazine

Kristine Drinke for Tank

Holly for Vecu Spring

Key's to these enchanted Looks -

  • Ethereal, barely there makeup.  Think light pinks, soft metallics.
  • Hair done in intricate braids, soft curls, or messy up-dos.
  • Flowers, flowers, everywhere. In your hair, in jewelry, in prints, pinned to your lapel.
  • Delicate dresses made out of materials like silk and chiffon.
  • Making sure that all the above is done deliberately - these are looks you don't want to do half way, it doesn't work then.
